Giorgia Boscola is set to become the first female gondola guide in the Italian city of Venice, breaking a 900-year-old male-only tradition.
Boscola – who has been rowing since she was seven years old – is the first female to ever pass the challenging gondolier exam.
But she still has to take a technical exam on navigating through the city’s ubiquitous canals and its famous landmarks before she earns her official license to guide sightseers.
Al Jazeera’s Claudio Lavanga reports.
