Athens and Ankara locked in cultural battle over origins of popular form of puppetry.

The United Nations has become involved in a dispute between Greece and Turkey – but the fight is not over territory.
Instead, the two countries are locked in a cultural war over the origins of a popular form of puppetry.
The UN’s recent decision to recognise Turkey’s puppet tradition – known as Karagiozis – triggered the clash. Now Greece is headed to the UN to assert its own distinctive puppet culture.
