Amid discussions about the future of Afghanistan, Britain’s military leaders have been getting an unusual kind of lesson on the country’s past.

Some critics of the US-led presence in Afghanistan argue that not enough attention has been paid to the military interventions of the last two centuries.

General David Richards, Britain’s military head, agrees and has told his colleagues that they could learn a thing or two by going to the theatre.
