Hamid Karzai, the president of Afghanistan, has outlined a timetable for Nato forces to leave his country.

As their armies prepare for a possible withdrawal, those same foreign powers are pledging to support the rebuilding of a shattered nation.

The announcements have been made at a major international conference in Kabul, the Afghan capital, where Al Jazeera’s James Bays spoke with Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the Nato secretary general.

Rasmussen says he shares Karzai’s ambition to hand responsibility over to Afghans by the end of 2014.
