On Sunday, an Iraqi politicianfrom the Iraqiya bloc was shot dead by armed men in the northern city of Mosul about 350km north of Baghdad – the third candidate from the party to be killed in the past two weeks.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.
The Iraqiya bloc of former Prime Minister Iyad Allawi narrowly won elections in March, beating the coalition led by Nouri al-Maliki, the incumbent prime minister.
Violence has dropped dramatically across Iraq since its peak in 2006 and 2007, but attacks remain common, especially in Baghdad and Mosul.
