High stakes for Merkel in presidential poll

Failure for German chancellor’s candidate in Wednesday’s vote may trigger election.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel

Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, faces an uphill battle to get Christian Wulff, her candidate, elected as president in a vote to be held on Wednesday.

Merkel’s popularity ratings have hit their lowest ever, damaged in part by Germany’s bailout for Greece, which is costing German tax-payers billions of dollars.

Many political analysts agree that a loss for Wulff may trigger an early election.
