Vigilante groups armed with home-made weapons in the Central African Republic have sprung up to fight in self defence against the Lord’s Resistance Army, a major rebel group in one of the least developed and poorest countries in the world.
The LRA, which originated in Uganda, uses child soldiers and is known for its brutality against civilians.
According to the UN, the LRA has killed scores of people and forced thousands to flee their homes in recent months.
