The economy is emerging as a key issue as campaigning gets under way for Britain’s national elections set for May 6.

On Wednesday, opposition parties engaged in heated debates with the ruling party of Gordon Brown, the prime minister, in parliament over the country’s financial situation.

The opposition blames Brown’s Labour party for widespread economic woes.
