Rescuers in China’s western Qinghai province have been digging through collapsed buildings trying to find survivors of a powerful earthquake that struck on Wednesday.

Hundreds were killed, thousands injured and the casualty count is expected to climb as rescuers race to reach trapped victims.

Many survivors spent the first night since the quake out in the cold, waiting for relief teams to bring tents and other supplies across a mountainous region known as one of the most inaccessible parts of China.

The epicentre was near the town of Jiegu, where around nine out of every 10 buildings were destroyed.
