Haitians refuse to renounce dignity
Amid the squalor and water scarcity, earthquake survivors are determined to look clean and good.
The earthquake that hit Haiti in January left more than one million people without homes. The conditions for the survivors living in the Caribbean nation’s tent cities remain dismal even now.
But many Haitians are showing extraordinary determination to maintain some semblance of a normal life by preserving beauty and a sense of community.
In the overcrowded tent camps in and around Port-au-Prince, where water is scarce and there are no showers, being clean and looking clean has become an obsession.
Al Jazeera’s Lucia Newman reports from one such camp in the Haitian capital where, in the midst of appalling squalor, men and women go to great lengths to rise above their predicament.
