Artisans fear coral trade clampdown

Italian jewellery makers fear regulation on coral harvesting will damage business.

Pink, Red coral trade regulation proposal, Cites

New regulations on coral are being discussed at a meeting of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (Cites) in Doha, the Qatari capital.

A Cites proposal wants exporting countries to prove their trade is sustainable after environmentalists said that pink and red corals are being overharvested and damaged.

But, as Claudio Lavanga found in Italy, some coral artisans believe it’s their business that’s under threat.
