The long-running dispute between Armenians and Azerbaijanis over the mountainous enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh has particular significance for the historic town of Shusha – which is seen as a cultural treasure by both ethnic groups.
In the 1990s, ethnic Armenian forces seized control of Nagorno-Karabakh from Azerbaijan, causing the region’s Azerbaijanis to flee. It’s still internationally recognised as being part of Azerbaijan.
