Urban warfare in the heart of Brazil’s second largest city, as police battle drug gangs.

Brazil Police respond to gang assualts in Rio de Janeiro

It looks like a battle zone, but Brazil’s government says it is now in control of a major shantytown near Rio de Janeiro, the country’s second largest city.

There was a massive show a force by both the army and police, in response to a deadly, five-day assault on drug gangs.

Critics accuse the Brazilian government of using brute force in a densely populated neighbourhoods.
