Sri Lanka eyes tea trade to rebuild

Island nation hopes ancient tea industry could help in reviving country’s battered economy.

Sri Lanka’s president has added 12 new ministers to his cabinet, ahead of the announcement of a new budget.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa has retained some of the key positions for himself, including the defence and finance minister portfolios.

He is pledging to spend billions on defence and on rebuilding infrastructure, since the war with the rebel Tamil Tigers ended a year and a half ago.

As Al Jazeera’s Steve Chao reports from Dickoya, the island’s ancient tea industry could be one such way of reviving the country’s fortunes.
