Drilling the Dead Sea for history

Scientists say sediment in the sea bed could hold the key to predicting natural disasters.

An international team of scientists has begun drilling deep below the Dead Sea.

Seven countries are working together to discover what the region looked like 500,000 years ago, in a bid to reveal a unique insight into human migration and evolution in the region.

The project will also examine sediment in the hope of predicting future natural disasters.

Al Jazeera’s Tony Birtley reports from the Dead Sea.
