NZ miners’ fate in the balance

Authorities have failed to establish communication with the 29 men trapped in a South Island coal mine.

More than a day has passed since a gas explosion struck the Pike River mine in New Zealand’s largest known coal deposit. The mountainous area is cordoned off, but rescue operations for the 29 missing men remain on hold.

Al Jazeera’s Gerald Tan reports.
