Yemeni force faces uphill battle

A special counterterrorism unit weighs its mission as country comes under pressure over al-Qaeda influence.

Yemeni prosecutors have issued an order to capture Anwar al-Awlaki dead or alive. The US-born Muslim preacher is wanted on charges of “inciting the killing of foreigners”.

The US, one of Yemen’s biggest military aid providers, also wants al-Awlaki over a failed attempt to bring down a passenger jet last year over Detroit city using an “underwear bomber”.

But are Yemen’s special forces equipped to face the heavy task of fighting Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula?

Al Jazeera’s Hashem Ahelbarra reports from Yemen.
