UN envoys to visit Darfur

Visit by envoys aimed at pushing authorities to end conflict in troubled western region.

Sudan Darfur

UN envoys are set to visit the western region of Darfur, with a view to nudging the Sudanese authorities into ending the seven-year conflict there.

The Security Council officials have already visited South Sudan, hoping to secure a peaceful referendum on independence there in January.

They are hoping a new peace strategy adopted by the Sudanese government will bring calm to the troubled Darfur region.
