Russian business stuck in red tape
Corruption has become institutionalised and small businesses find that bribes are required at every turn.

Business in today’s Russia might be less violent than during the mafia-dominated 1990s, but corruption has become institutionalised among low-level landowners and bureaucrats.
In fact, Russia is the worst-ranked G20 nation on Transparency International’s recently released corruption index, falling below Yemen, Libya and Pakistan.
Varvara Gubanova, an entrepreneur trying to open a beauty salon, says she expects to pay bribes during every step of opening and running her business.
