Afghanistan’s psychiatric challenge
Specialist facilities badly needed by a population suffering from poverty, conflict and abuse.

The World Health Organisation says more than 60 per cent of the people in Afghanistan suffer from mental-health problems, but there is only one specialist psychiatric hospital in the whole country.
Extreme poverty, conflict and abuse are just some of the reasons psychiatric problems are so pervasive in the war-ravaged country. The patients that the solitary mental health hospital can treat are a tiny fraction of those desperate for help.
