Renewed push for talks with Taliban

Hamid Karzai, the Afghan president, has said that reconciliation talks with the Taliban have been going on for “quite some time”.

Behind the scenes, several initiatives aimed at stabilising Afghanistan have been taken, the most high-profile being the formation of a peace council to facilitate the talks.

The head of the council says the Taliban is open to talks under certain conditions.
