A rare peek into ordinary life in secretive state, as journalists are invited to cover 65 years of communist rule.

As North Korea celebrates 65 years of communist rule, the notoriously secretive state has given unprecedented access to foreign journalists to cover the event.

While the lavish festivities marking the occasion are now familiar images to viewers around the world, glimpses of everyday life away from the choreographed shows, however, are not.

Al Jazeera’s Melissa Chan got a peek at life in the capital Pyongyang, while under the watchful eye of North Korean officials.
