Washington’s response to the deadly earthquake in Haiti that has left tens of thousands of people dead is provoking a heated debate in the US.

Some conservatives are accusing Barack Obama, the president, of using the disaster to boost his popularity and one even urged Americans to withold donations to the government’s relief effort.

But as Al Jazeera’s Rosiland Jordan reports, Obama has two prominent defenders.
