Japan suffers nurse shortage

Taking care of ageing population poses a challenge with country needing more than 15,000 nurses.

More than 15,000 nurses are needed in Japan, as the country faces a growing ageing population.

In addition, the turnover among Japanese nurses in hospitals is high, as working conditions are very demanding with even death from overwork being reported.

Hiring foreigners has been a challenge for the authorities as most foreign nurses have failed to pass the standard Japanese nursing examination.
