The senior US military officer has told politicians that more forces will probably be needed in Afghanistan if the Taliban is to be overcome.
Admiral Mike Mullen, the chairman of the US joint chiefs of staff, was taking questions on Capitol Hill during a hearing into whether he should be confirmed in his role for a second term.
Mullen painted a sobering picture of the war in Afghanistan. He said the Taliban knows the country, knows how to fight and had studied US troops.
He also said that the threat posed by the lack of good governance and corruption in Afghanistan was just as great as the threat of the Taliban. Al Jazeera’s Rosiland Jordan reports.
