Sarawak activist talks to Al Jazeera about the effects of deforestation.

For generations, Malaysia’s indigenous communities have lived and thrived in the country’s tropical forests.

But encroaching development is taking its toll on the natural environment, and the resulting deforestation is also a major contributor to the emissions that cause climate change.

Diweng Bakir, a Jagoi, is a campaigner for indigenous communities in the Malaysian state of Sarawak on northern Borneo.

He told Al Jazeera his story.
