Vietnam and Vatican ties improving

Pope meets Vietnamese president despite government’s suspicion of organised religion.

For the first time ever, the Roman Catholic Pope has met the president of Vietnam in what could be a first step towards formal diplomatic relations.

Vietnam is home to six million Catholics, but as Divya Gopalan reports from Ho Chi Minh City – Vietnam’s capital, the communist leadership has traditionally been suspicious of organised religion.
