Venice holds its own funeral

Historic Italian city mourns a rapidly declining population.

A sharp decline in population has prompted the residents of Venice to stage a funeral symbolising the death of the city.

At least 175,000 people filled its streets in 1951, but the number of people currently living in Venice stands at 60,000, a threshold that residents say signals the end of the city’s viability.
