When Al-Megrahi stepped off the plane that took him to his homeland of Libya, thousands of people were there to greet him.

Many believe he is innocent of the 1988 bombing of a Pan Am airliner over the Scottish town of Lockerbie, which killed 270 people – and see him as a scapegoat of the US and the UK.

But the US government and some victims’ relatives say he never should have been released.
