Schools in Hong Kong have been closed and the city’s busy container ports were due to suspend operations on Tuesday afternoon as the storm neared.

In the Philippines, heavy rains caused by Hagupit were blamed for flooding a gold mine in the north of the country, trapping 13 miners underground.

Rescuers have been scrambling to try to reach the trapped miners.

High capacity water pumps have been rushed in to try and clear a path to the men who are trapped up to 200 meters below ground.
