Ghana conference on aid opens

Ministers and senior officials meet to discuss ways to improve delivery of aid.

Ann Veneman, the executive director of Unicef, said urgent action against bureaucracy held the key to the fast deployment of aid.
“I have met with some ministers in developing countries who tell me they spend as much as 60 per cent of their time meeting with individual donors and organisations and their staff spend more time complying with separate bureaucratic procedures than delivering results,” she said.
A lot of pledged aid has not been delivered on time, she said.
“In 2007, less than half of aid was disbursed according to schedule,” she said.
“More progress must be made in meeting commitments to quality and quantity of aid to better contribute to achievement of the MDGs, or Millenium Development Goals.”
