Khuzestan is the centre of Iran’s oil industry, and has been an area of unrest with a majority Arab population.
More than half of Iran’s 69 million people are Persian, but Iran also has substantial ethnic Azeri, Kurd, Arab, Turkmen, Baluchi and Lor populations.
About three per cent are Arabs and the authorities are sensitive about protests and discontent in the southwestern Arab territories.
