Depor sinks Yellow Submarine

Two goals from Deportivo La Coruna defender Joan Capdevila put his side into a top spot on the Primera Liga table for at least 24 hours as they downed Villareal 2-0.

Two goal hero Joan Capdevila

A superb long range effort after just four minutes put the home side ahead and he added another to his tally midway through the second half from close range.

Villarreal are yet to score in this year’s league season and currently lie in 16th place with a solitary point.

In contrast, Depor have started the season with a bang with their hustling aggression and up tempo attacking causing last year’s Champions league semifinalists all sorts of headaches.

Coach Joaquin Caparros completely rebuilt his side during the close season and they showed greater hunger throughout the game.

In the first half the Yellow Submarine only threatened from set pieces through the boot of Argentinean playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme, who retired from international football during the week.

The visitors showed more enterprise in the second half but it proved to no avail as the hosts were not to be denied.

The rest of the matches in Spain’s elite league take place on Sunday with champions Barcelona looking to regain top spot and maintain their perfect record to the season when they visit Racing Santander.

Sevilla host city rivals Real Betis in the Seville derby, Getafe visit Valencia, and Real Madrid host Real Sociedad.
