Syria suspends power to Lebanon
Syria has suspended electricity supplies to Lebanon, blaming technical problems with its own power grid, Aljazeera reports.
The country had been sending power to Lebanon for the last month after Israel destroyed electricity stations in Lebanon.
Syrian officials told Mohamed Finaish, the Lebanese energy minister, that a problem had been noted in electric transmission linkages between Egypt and Syria, which had adversely affected the flow of Syrian electricity supplies to Lebanon.
The Syrian public corporation for generating and transmitting electricity said it was not feasible to continue supplying Lebanon by operating the two Syrian stations in Daimas and Anjar.
Syria insisted that the supply interruption was not politically motivated, and had happened before on several occasions.
Finaish reaffirmed that Syria’s suspension of its electricity supply to Lebanon was linked to technical factors.
Lebanon’s state-owned electricty provider, Electricite du Liban, said that the interruption was partly responsible for extra electricity rationing over the past two days, but that it expected power supplies to return to normal as of Friday.
