More storm dead found in China

The toll from severe rainstorms and flooding across China in the aftermath of a tropical storm has risen to at least 198.

Women make their way through a flooded street in Fuzhou.

The latest deaths were from Guangxi, where eight people were still missing, Xinhua, the official Chinese news agency reported.

Heavy rains swept away houses and triggered devastating mudslides over the weekend after Bilis hit the mainland.

The storm swelled reservoirs, causing them to overflow and sweep away thousands of homes and destroy crops.

Millions of people have evacuated their homes after torrential rain hit the provinces of Fujian, Hunan, Guangdong, Jiangxi and Zhejiang.

Downpours in southern Fujian caused flash floods and landslides that left 43 people dead and four injured. Another 24 people were missing including 10 buried in a landslide in Zhangzhou city.

Rescuers were working to dig them out, but officials said hopes of finding them alive were slim.

In the central province of Hunan, 39 people were confirmed dead where rescuers have evacuated 262,000 residents, with another 112,00 cut off by rising floodwaters.

Homes destroyed

At least 4.3 million people across that province have been  affected by the rainstorms and floods, with about 34,000  houses toppled and 156,000 hectares of farmland damaged.

The local government allocated nine million yuan ($1.13 million) to provide food and shelter to those evacuated.

In the neighbouring Guangdong province, 33 people were killed and 1.32 million people affected by the rainstorms.

About 47,000 people had to be evacuated in the southern province where another 4,744 homes were also destroyed.

Television news footage showed muddy water gushing down the streets in various regions while many trapped residents awaited rescue.

Meteorological authorities in Hunan, Guangdong and Guangxi provinces forecast more storms in their regions in the coming days.
