Thai police’s Cup crackdown

Police in Thailand have arrested 532 people for illegal gambling since the World Cup kicked off.

Included in those arrested have been 94 bookmakers, and police colonel Pinit Maneerat claims the amount involved in the betting has reached 5.1 million dollars (197 million baht).

Expecting a surge in illegal gambling during the World Cup Finals, police in Bangkok deployed 100 special units to specifically focus on the crime and they have staged numerous raids on bars and other areas.

Thais are renowned for the love of gambling as well as a passion for football, one research centre expected the Asian country to wager close to 1 billion dollars on the tournament.
