Jailed Chinese reporter gets prize

It was later revealed that internet giant Yahoo! assisted the Chinese government in convicting Shi by turning over emails from his account to prosecutors.

 

The World Association of Newspapers said: “The jailing of Mr Shi is an outrage. It is also a sad example of a Western company aiding and abetting repression in the belief that to refuse would harm its activities in the country.”

 

The Golden Pen honour has been awarded annually since 1961.
