Canada arrests Russian ‘spy’
Canada officials says the man has spied on Canada for more than a decade.
He is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.
Canadian security officials said that Hampel had used a fraudulent birth certificate to obtain at least three Canadian passports.
They recommended to the court that he immediately be deported.
False identity
“Hampel’s establishment of a legend based on Canadian documentation has provided him with the ability to covertly further the interests of the SVR for over a decade both within Canada and abroad,” the federal summary reads.
“An SVR illegal is an elite Russian intelligence officer,” said the documents filed on behalf of CSIS, Canada’s intelligence arm.
Details of his three Canadian passport applications in 1995, 2000 and 2002 were included in the documents.
Though most of the contents were blacked out, the first two applications claimed that Hampel was a lifeguard and travel consultant.
Calls to the Russian Embassy in Ottawa and the SVR in Moscow were not immediately returned.
