Official escapes Iraq blast; four dead

A roadside bomb targeting the convoy of a government official has killed four bystanders in Baghdad, according to a spokesman for the interior ministry.

Brigadier Abdul Karim Khalaf said: “The official, who works in the finance department of the interior ministry, was traveling in the convoy but was not hurt went the explosion went off in eastern Baghdad.”

Hala Mohammed Shakr, head of financial affairs at the interior  ministry, was driving through eastern Baghdad’s Mustansiriyah neighbourhood when the bombs exploded.

Al-Kindi hospital reported receiving eight wounded civilians.

Elsewhere in the city, a bomb exploded next to a passing convoy of security contractors, setting one vehicle ablaze and killing two bystanders, police said.

The blast on Ghadir street in southeast Baghdad also wounded five people.

Another bomb exploded in the restive Amil neighbourhood, a mixed Sunni-Shia area in southwest Baghdad that has been the scene of a  number of attacks, killing one person and wounding two.

The latest bombings comes after it was reported on Saturday that up to 27 people had been killed in continuing violence that is plaguing the country.

Car bombs have become an almost daily occurence in the capital city and have claimed the lives of both security forces and civilians.
