Saudi reformists jailed for sedition

A Saudi Arabian court has sentenced three prominent reform activists to jail terms ranging from six to nine years.

The defendants asked for a constitutional monarchy

Lawyers and relatives said on Sunday that Ali al-Dimaini was sentenced to nine years, Abd Allah al-Hamed to seven years and Matruk al-Falih to six years.

The three were convicted of “stirring up sedition and disobeying the ruler,” Dimaini’s wife, Fawzia al-Uyuni, said.

The three men were arrested in March 2004 after signing petitions calling for Saudi Arabia’s absolute monarchy to move to a constitutional model and speed up political reforms.
