Iraqi media figure released

Muthana Harith al-Dhari, media officer of the influential Association of Muslim Scholars in Iraq and editor of al-Basaer, has been released by US occupation forces, Aljazeera’s correspondent reports.

Al-Dhari strongly opposes the proposed national conference

Al-Dhari was handed over to the Iraqi police prior to his release on Thursday.

He had been detained by US forces on 2 August when he turned up at the Um al-Quraa mosque, the headquarters of the Association of Muslim Scholars.

Supporters of the Islamic figure said he had been arrested for opposing the proposed US-backed Iraqi national conference in a TV programme.

Al-Dhari’s arrest triggered strong condemnation from Arab associations and political groups in the region and demands for his release.
