Aristide back in the Caribbean
Former Haitian president Jean Bertrand Aristide has arrived in Jamaica, two weeks after fleeing into exile in the Central African Republic.
Huntley Medley, an official in Jamaican Prime Minister Percival Patterson office, said a plane carrying Aristide touched down at Kingston‘s Norman Manley international airport on Monday.
Medley declined to provide any more details about the former Haitian president’s immediate plans.
Aristide fled Haiti on 29 February, ending weeks of violence which left at least 70 people dead after opposition and rebel forces demanded his resignation. He arrived in the Central African Republic the next day.
Aristide has claimed he has been forced into exile as part of a plot managed by the United States and backed by France. Washington and Paris had strongly denied the claims.
In a protest, Haiti froze its diplomatic relations with Jamaica on Monday before Aristide’s arrival in Kingston and recalled its ambassador from there.
