Blasts in Mosul, Basra

At least two members of Iraq’s security forces have been killed and 14 wounded in car bomb attacks in the cities of Mosul and Basra.

A car exploded in the path of a national guard patrol in Mosul

One car exploded in the path of a national guard patrol in a southern district of Mosul, killing two members of the Iraqi National Guard and wounding four others, an Iraqi police officer said on Tuesday.

A second car bomb blew up a few hours later in the path of a convoy of General Rashid Falih, a national guard commander, wounding seven of his companions, the officer added.

A doctor at Mosul‘s main hospital said four of the wounded were in a critical condition.

At the scene of the first attack, national guardsmen in green military fatigues, some masked, cordoned off the area. The chassis and remains of the car bomb were strewn in the middle of the road as flames engulfed a white car nearby.

Basra blast

In Basra, a roadside bomb exploded in the path of a convoy carrying the southern city’s police chief General Muhammad Kadhim al-Ali. He escaped unscathed.

Three of his companions were wounded in the attack in the central Kut al-Hujaj neighbourhood.

Earlier, an Iraqi cameraman working for Reuters was shot dead during clashes in Ramadi on Monday.

Dhia Najim, a 57-year-old freelance video cameraman, was apparently shot dead by a sniper while on assignment for the London-based news agency, a Reuters correspondent in Baghdad said.

It was unclear whether the sniper had been an armed anti-US fighter or a US soldier.

The US military is known to have stationed snipers in Ramadi, west of Baghdad.

The US military confirmed that a cameraman working for a “major news agency” had been caught in clashes between US troops and fighters.

The video camera found on Najim showed pictures of previous attacks on US-led troops, the military said.
