Egyptian aid bound for Darfur

A 21-strong Egyptian medical team also arrived on Monday, and will set up a medical camp in the province’s capital al-Fashir to help in the treatment of displaced persons and other people in northern Darfur.

Thousands of people have been killed in Darfur and more than a million have fled their homes, in what is currently described as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. 

Al-Salam camp

In the biggest refugee camp in Darfur, the Sudanese government and international organisations are trying to ease the life of those who were forced to leave their homes because of war.

Tents, furniture, and toilets have been provided by humanitarian organisations, while the Sudanese government has deployed a large number of policemen to protect the camps’ ill-fated population.

Attackers on horses

Ahmad Abd Al-Halim, a baker who lives in the al-Salam camp told the Middle East News Agency (MENA) he fled his hometown because of war.

“The hell of war has eaten everything… houses, livestock, and belongings, so I came here looking for peace” he said.

He said he was selling bread to increase his income in order to pay his children’s school expenses.

Nura Muhammad, a Sudanese woman said she was taking care of eight children, after her husband had disappeared in the ongoing war.

“My husband disappeared. We have seen horrible times, attackers on horses or camels used to sweep our village taking everything. Those who stood in their way were killed immediately.

“The attackers were merely thieves; they were not interested in anything but theft. I hope things get better and we are able to go back home” she said.

A Sudanese policeman in the camp has confirmed to MENA the situation is stable in the al-Salam camp.

“The situation is stable. Any problem is solved internally. I hope we can achieve our mission and all displaced people can go back home” Ahmad Husayn said.
