Aljazeera broadcast an audiotaped address purportedly from deposed Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein on Friday, the Muslim holy day.

In the audiotape, the speaker claiming to be Saddam called on Iraqis to safeguard the properties of the state and his ousted Baath Party until “things return to normal” and spoke of the need to “salvage” even those who “betrayed the nation” by collaborating with the US occupiers.

The speaker, who also called for resistance to the US occupation, gave July 27 as the date of the recording.
