Saudi Arabia foils “attacks”
Saudi Arabian government officials said on Monday they had arrested a group of people suspected of plotting what they described as “terrorist attacks”.
An interior ministry official was quoted by Saudi television as saying a cell of 16 people were arrested for planning attacks against “vital Saudi installations and targets”. The report did not elaborate on the alleged targets.
Saudi security forces are still pursuing other members believed to be linked to the cell.
A large cache of arms and chemicals were also siezed. Local television broadcast footage of arms, including rocket-propelled grenades, ammunition and large amounts of chemicals, it said could be used to make explosives.
The weapons and chemicals were found in the capital Riyadh, the central province of Qassim and the Eastern province.
Saudi Arabia has stepped up arrests of alleged militants following the 12 May triple attacks in Riyadh against compounds which left 35 people killed.
