“We will have Mikhail Gorbachev, the Dalai Lama, Shimon Peres, Lech Walesa, Rigoberta Menchu, 25 Nobel peace prize winners in total,” a spokesman for the organisers said in Rome.

Kicking off the opening ceremony at Rome’s city hall will be the awarding of the ‘Man For Peace Award’, a prize given each year to an individual or organisation in recognition of outstanding humanitarian activities.

Italian actor Roberto Benigni won the award last year. This year it is due to go to a football team of Italian singers, both famous and unknown, who have collected more than 30 million euros for humanitarian programmes over 22 years, a statement said.

The summit, the fourth of its kind, will focus on new ethics in politics, the economy and science. It will last three days and be attended by Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi.
