Two US soldiers killed in Iraq

Two US soldiers have been killed in an attack north of Baghdad.

Iraqis have stepped up their resistance against US occupation

A spokesman for the US Army’s 4th Infantry Division said the two soldiers were killed and another was wounded when their vehicle hit a roadside bomb.

The deaths brought to 116 the number of US troops killed in hostile action since Washington declared major combat operations over on 1 May, compared to 115 US combat deaths during the US-led war, according to official figures.

The attack happened after dark on Tuesday, about 120km north of Baghdad.

Earlier attack

Earlier on Tuesday morning, US forces came under attack in two separate incidents in the city of Samarra, north of Baghdad.

Witnesses told Aljazeera’s correspondent that a US military camp was targeted in the first attack. In the second incident, a US tank was damaged in an attack on a patrol in the al-Mafraq area, south of Samarra.

Resistance fighters

A leading Saudi dissident on Tuesday told Aljazeera.net that thousands of fighters from the kingdom are embroiled in attacks against American occupation soldiers in Iraq.

Dr Muhammad al-Massari, a political activist living in exile in London, said resistance attacks in Iraq will continue to escalate in Baghdad.

He said ”there are around 5000 mujahidin fighters from Saudi Arabia in Baghdad, and many others joining them from all over the Muslim and Arab world”.

Dr al-Massari added that “these men have already stepped up their efforts to kick out the American imperialists from Iraq, but what we are seeing is the tip of the iceberg”.
