Will the American embassy move to Jerusalem?

The United States is ‘discussing’ moving the American embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

US President Donald Trump has stated more than once during his election campaign that he wants to move the American embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, a decision that deeply alarmed Palestinians.

Palestinians criticised such promises as they hope to make East Jerusalem the capital of their future state, and have had the broad support of the international community for that aspiration.

Those who have cautioned the US against such a move include Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Hamas and Nabil Shaath, former Palestinian foreign minister.

However, since getting elected in January 2017, Trump’s plan has been effectively been shelved. Trump’s actions since have left Israeli officials disappointed, with the embassy remaining in Tel Aviv – at least for now – and the White House seeking to restart peace efforts.
