2018 – The year’s weather extremes in photos
As we end the year, we highlight month by month some of the impressive weather stories and images that we covered.
January - Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, was the place to be when temperatures reached to over 47C. In Melbourne, the heat caused tens of thousands of homes to be without power as the heat wave caused a blackout in Victoria. [Glen Campbell/EPA]

February - London was just one city affected by the severe winter storm that moved through the UK at the end of the month. The storm brought widespread wind damage and travel and power disruptions for many areas. [Alex Burstow/Getty]
March - The US state of Massachusetts experienced three storms in just an 11-day period in March. This nor'easter brought with it waves crashing over the seawall in the coastal town of Scituate. [CJ Gunther/EPA]
April - Torrential rain hit the Yemeni capital of Sanaa and left many streets across the city underwater. Further north, the same system turned deadly when violent storms and flash flooding hit Israel and the Palestinian territories. [Yahya Arhab/EPA]

September - Hurricane Florence was a powerful and long-lived hurricane that caused severe damage to the Carolinas in the US. In North Carolina, it was the wettest storm ever recorded, with 690mm of rain falling near the town of Kings Grant. [Jonathan Drake/Reuters]
October -Torrential downpours caused extensive flooding across Qatar with lengthy thunderstorms bringing parts of the Gulf state to a standstill. According to the Civil Aviation Authority, the suburb of Abu Hamor in the capital Doha, recorded 84mm of rain in under six hours, making it the nation's wettest October day on record. [Ben Figgis]
November - Firefighters walk among the ashes of a wildfire-ravaged home in Malibu, California. The Camp Fire, in the northern part of the state, was the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in California's history, responsible for at least 86 deaths and the destruction of more than 18,000 structures. December - Filipino residents ride on a boat during a rescue operation at in the town of Bulan, Sorsogon province. Three people were killed in a landslide in the city of Legazpi, Albay province, and hundreds of families were evacuated to higher grounds in Sorsogon province after a tropical depression brought heavy rains.
